A few words about Aoös River
With a total length of 260 km (70 of which within Greek territory), Aoös, the greatest river of Epirus, has its source in the north of Pindos, at an altitude of 1.340 metres. Famous for its lush vegetation, the Vikos-Aoös National Park lies in the north of its source. Aoös flows through a gorge between the northern slopes of Tymfi and enters Albania from the south-west of Konitsa before it flows into the Adriatic Sea. Its most important tributaries are Sarantaporos and Voidomatis. The former has its source in Gramos while the latter has its source in Tymfi. They both flow into the main stem of Aoös near Konitsa.
By the 1980s the river had already been partially harnessed through a dam at the source which has served the power needs of the area ever since. Lately, there has been a serious intention to construct a new dam that would divert the flow of the Aoös towards the lake of Ioannina. The construction of so interventionist a project entails changes of such magnitude that would irreparably disrupt the ecological balance of the area, with incalculable consequences to the environment, the flora and fauna of the region but also the people.
This area, integrated into the NATURA 2000 program and protected by EU law, is considered to be a “biological treasure” as, apart from its dramatic landscape, it is the natural habitat of numerous endangered and endemic species such as the brown bear, the wolf, the Balkan chamois and the Orthrias pindus, a fish species that can only be found in Aoös river.
The idea that all this might be lost forever is inconceivable.
Vovousa Village
Built at an altitude of 1,000 meters, along the valley sides of Aoös River, Vovousa is a small yet historic
village that belongs to the East Zagori regional unit of the Municipality of Ioannina. It is a village of approximately 70 residents, most of who are of Vlach origin. Vovousa or Baiassa-in Vlach language- is located in the center of the National Park of Northern Pindos, near the edge of the National Park of Valia Calda. Thanks to Aoös River, the water element clearly predominates in this protected area of outstanding natural beauty. It is quite likely that even the name of the village can be attributed to the river, since “Vovousa” echoes
the roar of the stream that runs through the village.
What urged me to visit Vovousa was a combination of everything mentioned above but especially the possibility that this harmonious coexistence of people and nature may get disrupted. I spent seven days there, and after a few months I paid a second visit during my summer holidays. I tried delicious, homemade desserts and dishes made by the women of the village; I met some great people; I heard stories about the war and about how the entire village was set ablaze; I savored the long forgotten smell of the earth and the mountain herbs; I admired the beautiful gardens of the houses; I marveled at the art of craftsmen.
Constantinos is taking a nap in his crib;
Mister Thanasis was born under a tree by the river;
Dimitris took us to a mountain top nearby. There, we got to see the village from above;
Mr Alekos owns the most impressive carpentry workshop I have ever seen.
We ate berries hanging from trees on the side of the road; we found wood trunks in the river
and we actually used them to cross it; the sound of the river was like a lullaby to our ears;
so we dove inside its freezing cold waters.

Λίγα λόγια για τον ποταμό
Ο Αώος είναι ποταμός της Ηπείρου, με συνολικό μήκος 260 χλμ (70 εκ των οποίων σε ελληνικό έδαφος),
πηγάζει από τη βόρεια Πίνδο, διαρρέει μία χαράδρα ανάμεσα στις βόρειες πλαγιές της Τύμφης και των νότιων απολήξεων του Σμόλικα, εισέρχεται στην Αλβανία νοτιοδυτικά της Κόνιτσας και εκβάλλει στην Αδριατική θάλασσα. Οι πηγές του βρίσκονται σε υψόμετρο 1.340 μέτρων. Λίγο βορειότερα των πηγών του Αώου βρίσκεται ο Εθνικός
Δρυμός Πίνδου, η βλάστηση του οποίου είναι ιδιαίτερα πλούσια. Σημαντικότεροι παραπόταμοί του είναι
ο Σαραντάπορος και ο Βοϊδομάτης. Ο πρώτος πηγάζει από τον Γράμμο, ο δεύτερος από την Τύμφη
και ενώνονται με τον Αώο κοντά στην Κόνιτσα.
Από τη δεκαετία του ’80 το ποτάμι έχει εν μέρει τιθασευτεί με τη δημιουργία φράγματος που εξυπηρετεί τις ανάγκες ηλεκτροδότησης της περιοχής. Σήμερα, υπάρχει η πρόθεση να κατασκευαστεί ένα νέο φράγμα,
που θα εκτρέψει τα νερά του Αώου προς τη λίμνη των Ιωαννίνων. Ένα τέτοιο ενδεχόμενο κινδυνεύει να σημάνει το απότομο τέλος του ταξιδιού του ποταμού. Μια αλλαγή τέτοιων διαστάσεων θα διαταράξει ανεπανόρθωτα την οικολογική ισορροπία της περιοχής, με ανυπολόγιστες συνέπειες για το περιβάλλον, τον άνθρωπο,
τη χλωρίδα και την πανίδα της Ηπείρου.
Η περιοχή είναι ένα βιολογικό θησαυροφυλάκιο, προστατευόμενη από τη νομοθεσία της ΕΕ ως περιοχή
NATURA 2000, που φιλοξενεί αναρίθμητα απειλούμενα και ενδημικά είδη, σπάνιους οικότοπους και συγκλονιστικά τοπία. Χαρακτηρίζεται επίσης από εμβληματικούς αλλά απειλούμενους κατοίκους, όπως η καφέ αρκούδα, ο λύκος, το αγριόγιδο και το σπάνιο είδους ψαριού που υπάρχει μόνο στον Αώο, ο Πινδοβίνος.
Δεν είναι εύκολο να πιστέψει κανείς πως όλα αυτά, κάποια στιγμή, ίσως να μην είναι εκεί…
Η Βοβούσα
Χτισμένη στην κοιλάδα του Αώου, σε υψόμετρο 1.000 μέτρων, αποτελεί ένα μικρό αλλά ιστορικό χωριό του Ανατολικού Ζαγορίου στον Νομό Ιωαννίνων. Σήμερα αριθμεί περί τους 70 κατοίκους, κατά κύριο λόγο βλάχικης καταγωγής. Η Βοβούσα ή Μπαϊάσσα -στα Βλάχικα- βρίσκεται στο κέντρο του Εθνικού Δρυμού της Βόρειας Πίνδου και στις παρυφές του Εθνικού Δρυμού της Βάλια Κάλντα, σε μια προστατευόμενη περιοχή εξαιρετικού φυσικού κάλλους, όπου κυριαρχεί το ορεινό τοπίο και το υδάτινο στοιχείο. Η Βοβούσα είναι άρρηκτα συνδεδεμένη με τον ποταμό Αώο. Είναι πολύ πιθανό να χρωστά ακόμα και το ίδιο της το όνομα σε αυτόν,
από τη βοή των νερών που την χωρίζουν στα δύο.
Όλα αυτά, αλλά κυρίως η πιθανότητα διατάραξης της αρμονικής συνύπαρξης ανθρώπων και φύσης,
με οδήγησαν στη Βοβούσα, στον Αώο. Έμεινα και δούλεψα εκεί για επτά ημέρες και μετά από μερικούς μήνες πήγα ξανά για τις καλοκαιρινές διακοπές. Δοκίμασα σπιτικά γλυκά και φαγητά φτιαγμένα από τα χεράκια των γυναικών του χωριού, γνώρισα απλούς αλλά σπουδαίους ανθρώπους. Άκουσα ιστορίες από τον πόλεμο, τότε που κάηκε σχεδόν όλο το χωριό. Μύρισα ξεχασμένες μυρωδιές της γης και των βοτάνων της βουνίσιας φύσης.
Θαύμασα τους υπέροχους κήπους των σπιτιών, την τέχνη των μαστόρων.
Ο Κωνσταντίνος κοιμάται για μεσημέρι στην κούνια του.
Ο Κύριος Θανάσης γεννήθηκε κάτω από ένα δέντρο δίπλα στο ποτάμι.
Ο Δημήτρης μας πήγε σε μια κορυφή και είδαμε το χωριό από ψηλά.
Ο Κύριος Αλέκος έχει το πιο όμορφο ξυλουργείο που έχω δει.
Φάγαμε μούρα που κρέμονταν στην άκρη του δρόμου.
Περπατήσαμε μέσα στο ποτάμι στηριζόμενοι σε ξύλα που βρήκαμε μέσα του.
Μας νανούρισε ο ήχος του και βουτήξαμε στα παγωμένα του νερά…
The river hollows out the rocks.
Listen to the roots, how they absorb the water.
Down the mountain it flows.
Shall we go with the flow?
Look at those creatures inside the river.
The reeds embrace tightly.
And the rocks are constantly whispering.
What are they trying to say?
It’s frozen.
First it leaves some traces and then it goes away.
The frog is jumping.
I know nothing about rivers.
It disappears behind those trees.
Shall we go fishing?
It’s windy.
Last night I saw the boatman.
The river hollows out the rocks, can you grasp it?

Το ποτάμι σκάβει τα βράχια.
Άκου τις ρίζες πως ρουφάνε το νερό.
Απ' το βουνό έρχεται.
Να το πάρει το ποτάμι?
Κοίτα αυτά τα πλάσματα μέσα του.
Τα καλάμια αγκαλιάζονται.
Όλη την ώρα τα βράχια ψιθυρίζουν.
Τι λένε?
Είναι παγωμένο.
Φτιάχνει ίχνη και φεύγει.
Ο βάτραχος χοροπηδάει.
Δε ξέρω εγώ από ποτάμια.
Πίσω από εκείνα τα δέντρα χάνεται.
Πάμε για ψάρεμα?
Φυσάει.
Είδα τον βαρκάρη χθες τη νύχτα.
Το ποτάμι σκάβει τα βράχια, το καταλαβαίνεις?
